1st Place in the Wind Turbine Competition!

March 5, 2026

Over the past month, five grade 6/7 classes at both Lakeview and Voyageur Elementary schools have been busy learning about wind turbines. Working in teams, students have been working through the design thinking process with wind turbine blades. They first researched components of energy, environmentalism and trades involved with wind turbines. They were then challenged to work together in teams to design and create blades. The challenge was to create efficient blade designs experimenting with angles, gear ratios, rotors, sanding edges and determining the number of blades to create the most wind energy when blown by a steady stream of air, generated by a fan, for one minute.

Six teams advanced from the schools to participate in the Skills Canada Regional Competition held at John McGinnis Educational Center in School District 57, on Friday, February 27, 2026. At the event, all teams were very successful with two teams finishing in the top three. The 1st place team from Voyageur Elementary included: Gavin Gillman, Keaton Simpson, Rhyker Lowe and Carson Ryder. The 2nd place team from Voyageur Elementary included: Wyatt Nelson, Dawson Kozlowski, Riley Cartier and Evan Chambers. The 3rd place team was from Beaverly Elementary in Prince George.

We congratulate all students on their successful participation during the local and regional events. We wish the 1st place team and their teacher, Sue Matheson, all the best of luck as they head to Abbotsford on April 15th to compete at the Skills Canada Provincials Trades and Technology Competition. Special thanks go out to all participating classroom teachers, site principals, Lisa Scott (Construction Foundation of BC), Trevor Hood (SD 57 Work Experience Coordinator and Regional Organizer), Sue Hollowell (SD 28 Numeracy and Curriculum Support Teacher) and Skills Canada for organizing and supporting these events.
